Local Arizona Midwife Article: Stephanie Soderblom

This is so awesome! It is a great (and positively written!) article on one of our local midwives, Stephanie Soderblom, whom I have met through our local birth circle, and who is an amazing midwife - check it out!

Bringing Babies Home

For anyone interested in reading more about Stephanie, here is her website:

Nurturing Hearts Birth Services

Stephanie runs what is probably one of the largest birth-services organizations in the state - her office has a maternity (and family) chiropractor, a massage therapist, two midwives and numerous apprentice midwives, not to mention the childbirth classes, doula and childbirth education certification classes, birth circle meetings and other workshops/events that her office hosts!

Arizona has an absolutely amazing community of licensed midwives, and it's always great to see one get the recognition she deserves!

International Midwives Day in Phoenix: A Success!

A friend and I attended the International Midwives' Day celebration today in Phoenix, and it was a big success! Lots of exhibits, loads of people attending - a hit!

This year (the first year of doing something bigger here in Phoenix), we had music, food, a raffle, ultrasounds, free pregnancy massage, and a number of booths with some of the following:

- Bradley method childbirth
- ICAN of Central Arizona
- Waterbirth
- Arizona Student Midwives
- Baby Wraps
- Pregnancy Photography
- Birth Statuary

AND..... Sign-ups for a soon-to-be-formed Arizona Birth Advocacy group! If you weren't there, contact Mary Langlois to find out more and to sign up! I can't wait. We've needed this for a long time.

The organizers did a terrific job of getting together a great event! Nice work, everyone! Looking forward to next year.

Upcoming Arizona Birth Events!!

Here are some upcoming birth events in the Phoenix Valley Birth Community!

Global Midwifery Client Reunion Picnic
I'm writing somewhat guiltily, as this event started (ahem!) five minutes ago. Yes, I know - no one reading this will have time to plan on it anyhow! But think about it for next year! This is a great time for Global Midwifery's clients, current and former, to gather, meet other homebirth parents, say hi to our wonderful midwives and student midwives, and have a picnic/playdate/hangout time. 10a-2p at Sirrene Park in Chandler. I'll be there in half an hour!

Infant Loss Memorial Service
This is being put on at Chandler Bible Church in Chandler (480-786-3124) by a friend of mine, Jennifer, who lost twins in a miscarriage this past fall. The service is being held to honor and remember all infants lost before birth due to any cause - miscarriage, stillbirth, ectopic, abortion, etc. Check out her website here! Attending or not, you can still have your child's name and/or due date and/or conception/loss dates included in the bulletin.

Michel Odent is Visiting Phoenix!
Yes, really! This is the pioneer of waterbirth in France and an amazing author, speaker and obstetrician who stands up unashamedly for natural birth and safe birthing practices. He will be speaking at St. Joseph's hospital on April 29th. Here's the information:

"Yes, he is speaking at St. Joes at two different times on April 29, 7am and 3pm. The topics are: "The Role of Catecholamines During Labor" and Childbirth: From Physiology to Practice". For information contact: Alyce-Anne Meadows, 602-506-6347 Alyce-AnneMeadows@ mail.maricopa. gov. RSVP Margaret Lopez 602-506-6180, margaretlopez@ mail.maricopa. gov"

I probably won't be able to go due to babysitting issues, but I hope that lots of people can make it!

Cheers! I'm off to the picnic!

Love,
Diana

Great News for Arizona Mamas: A New Birth Center!

I forgot to post this a few weeks ago when I was made aware of it, but I wanted to get this out there ASAP!! One of Phoenix's distinguished midwives, Shell Walker, has taken a great leap and started a birth center in Phoenix. This is an extremely exciting move, as the entire Phoenix valley has been birth-center-less for about two years, ever since Bethany Birth Center was forced to close down due to costs.

You can see pictures of the new facility here:

Pictures of House for Birth Center

It's gorgeous!

I am going to post Shell's letter of announcement here so that everyone can see what's going on. She's looking for help getting everything off the ground, and it should be open to clients soon!

"Dear friends and family,

"I have exciting news to share!

"The long long dream of a birth center has finally come true!

"I am partnering with one of my clients Julia H.- attorney, and her husband Steven H.- financial advisor on this project. They are bringing their passion and professional experience to the table and it looks like their little girl will be the first baby born at the center!

"The property that we have selected is absolutely gorgeous, sits on an acre of irrigated land in the heart of the city! It is located just a few blocks off of Interstate I-10 and is conveniently located between Good Samaritan and St. Josephs hospital.

"Imagine families birthing in a lovely B&B setting complete with spa services, personalized care, and easy hospital access if needed. Gift shop, Baby announcements, Postpartum baby nurse and doula care, Birth photography, Childbirth classes, Family friendly.

"From Tucson to Denver, there is not a facility like this!

"We are set to take over the property on March 1st. and have a 15 year with an open option to purchase. The property can be viewed at:http://picasaweb.%20google.com/%20birthfirst/%20BirthCenter?

"As well as some minor investment in the facility we would like to generate enough capitol to cover the first year of expenses. We have reached 30% of our goal and are looking for investors or groups of investors who would be interested in investing in this project.

"I will be overseeing the clinical aspect of the project which will be separate from the from the business and financial aspect of the facility and center; which Steven will be overseeing. If you are at all interested and would like more information, please contact Steven at: mailto:hall_steven@%20yahoo.com

"I know these are not exactly the best of times to seek investment, but you never know what folks might be interested in or capable of so I am putting this out there to you all.

"In lieu of finances, well wishes, good thoughts and emotional support will be greatly appreciated and accepted.

"Thanks!
Shell

"P.S I am including several doulas and childbirth educators on this contact list because we would really like to have as much community involvement and support as possible. If you are a childbirth or health care professional and would like to explore how we might make this a truly successful COMMUNITY project, please drop me a line!"

Blogging Break

DH and DS and I attended the "Be BOLD" Birth Fair on Monday (yesterday). It was awesome! Lots of booths by midwives and birth doulas and postpartum doulas and birth photographers and childbirth educators - and more!! I picked up a couple of cards and got to meet some people. It is great finally being able to put some names and faces together with people I am starting to meet in Phoenix's wonderful, wonderful natural birth community. They're a great group of women! Hopefully I can eventually find my place among them rather than just being a groupie. :) My wonderful midwife and her team of apprentices had their own lovely booth, and it was fun to see all of them together.

I'll be hosting some family for the next week and thus will not be blogging for at least a few days! In the meantime I'll be reading all the books listed on the sidebar, working toward more book reviews.

Until then, love to all!

BOLD Event in Phoenix

Anyone in the Phoenix area might be interested in this:

The play "Birth" by Karen Brody will be performed twice on Monday, September 1st in Tempe as part of the Phoenix BOLD Project (Birth On Labor Day). In between shows there will be a birth fair with booths from local birth professionals (midwives, doulas, etc.) plus lots of other great stuff (birth photography, birth/baby paraphernalia, books, etc.). Should be fun! We won't be going to the play, but we're going to try to make the birth fair. Our wonderful midwife will have her own booth, as will lots of other fun friends and people, so it should be a wonderful day.

Hope to see any and all of you there!
