Various Helps for Hyperemesis

A friend of mine this morning posted a Facebook link to an HG mother's request for advice. I thought I would take brief notes on the responses! Some were the inevitable "ginger and crackers," but most looked like they were coming from mothers who truly knew what they were talking about (i.e. other HG mothers).

Here are some of the suggestions:

- High-protein snacks, like almonds

- Zofran

- Peppermint tea

- Eating something every 10 to 15 minutes

- Diclectin - replica (U.S.) or the real thing (Canada)

- Caffeine-free coca cola, taken by the spoonful

- Cold foods and cold drinks

- Eating things that aren't bad to throw up later (bananas, etc.)

- Chamomile essential oils

- Acupuncture and acupressure

- Non-water fluids, and making sure to keep hydrated

- B-complex (P5P) and zinc supplements

- Vitamin B shots

- Ginger

- Medical cannabis

- Reflexology

- Hypnosis

- Nux vomica

- Aromatherapy

- Sour foods, like sour patches - "the brain has a hard time processing sour and nausea at the same time"

Thoughts, anyone?

  1. Hi, Fern! For severe HG, when the baby's or the mother's life is in danger, or when the mother is not reacting to pharmaceuticals and is severely compromised, medical marijuana can be a life-saver. It's a personal decision, of course, but I think the evidence is good that it's quite safe - and it is taken in very small doses. Considering that the abortion rate for HG babies is 1 in 7, I would much rather see those babies exposed to tiny amounts of cannabis than for their lives to be ended because their mums are experiencing such unendurable suffering. If you look at the link above, I believe that there is some research mentioned; also, if you visit my other blog and search "marijuana," I have linked to several studies showing the use of medical marijuana for hyperemesis. It's not ideal, but I'm open to the necessity of it. HG mums are going to be hit with huge amounts of pharmaceutical drugs (Zofran, Phenergan, Reglan, etc.), so "drug-free" pregnancies usually aren't an option anyhow. :)
