This is probably one of the most beautiful hospital births I have ever seen! Ever! Check it out!
The mother stated that this was her fourth birth, her first three being homebirths, and that they birthed in-hospital after finding that there was a chance baby would be born with hemophilia (he wasn't).
I was so impressed with the hospital staff in this movie. If all mothers birthing in-hospital could look forward to this kind of treatment and birthing environment, then our problems would be over. I do believe that homebirth has some inherent advantages over hospital birth on the whole, but since many women will always want to birth in-hospital, this is what hospital birth should look like. Loved it!
Thanks to Bellies and Babies for posting this!!!

Later addition: You can read some comments and an interview with the mother, Sarah, by clicking on this here. Good stuff!

Even later addition: The hospital where the above birth took place is unfortunately still not waterbirth friendly (this birth was an exception, not the rule). Want to make a difference?Email Robin Piaggione at rpiaggione@kaleidahealth.org and tell her how much you appreciate, admire, and love this birth and the fact that this mother was able to obtain a non-interventionist waterbirth - she is working hard to make waterbirth available for other mothers, and all letters received will help her to make this happen. Off to email.....
Your comments about this video brought tears to my eyes because this is our birth! Thank you for sharing it! I hope and pray that our story helps other families.
ReplyDeleteSarah, congratulations on your birth and thank you for posting your video! You are an amazing birther and I was blessed by your video!! I know it will be such a blessing to other mothers as well.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I have never opened up about any of my birhs to this scale, and my hope is that it is encouraging. I hope it helps extinguish some of the fears both on the hospital side and the homebirth side. God allowed us to see the two worlds beautifully come together, and the result was amazing! If you or your readers are inteested, here's the link to a blog that I had the oppurtunity to answer some questions about our experience: http://mommymichael.blogspot.com/2010/05/comment-turned-post.html
ReplyDeleteThanks a bunch, Sarah! I have added the link to that page at the bottom of this post. I hope that people check it out. I have never seen home and hospital birth merged so perfectly, and your birth is a perfect model for any looking to combine the two. Thanks!! :)
ReplyDeleteThis hospital is still not waterbirth friendly. One of the people thanked at the end of the video has a different position at the hospital now. Apparently, the new guy isn't on board with approving gentle birth choices such as ours. My prayer is that I have the opportunity to personally address these people, thank them for making our waterbirth possible, talk to them about our experience, and encourage them to make this choice a standard option for all families. The nurse manager wants this to happen, and sad she may call on me to share my experience. I hope this really happens. This hospital needs to be commended for how they handled Malakai's birth. I want them to be proud of it. I would appreciate your prayers. Maybe, it would also be effective if others would contact the hospital and commend them for this birth. What do you think?
ReplyDeleteThe very supportive nurse manager's email :
ReplyDeleterpiaggione@kaleidahealth.org
Her name is Robin Piaggione. She is working hard to make this possible for more women!
I think that's a great idea! Will post, both on this entry and in another. Thanks for the idea!
ReplyDeleteDiana, your email made an impact on Robin! She said we definitely started something. Thank you. We need to keep this up! I'm going to spread the word. Let's flood her with complimentary emails, and help her in the fight for gentle birth choices in this hospital!!
ReplyDeleteSo awesome, Sarah! That's great! I will hope to hear great things. I also posted the video and the email to our local birth network yahoo group, so hopefully we might get a few letters from there. Let me know how it goes and thanks for all you're doing!! :)
